Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

The goal of the Cardiovascular Disease Prevention program is to improve the cardiovascular health and quality of life for Hamilton county residents. This is accomplished through educational/awareness activities, screening and referral of high risk individuals/early identification of heart disease (hypertension, heart attack, strokes) and prevention of recurrent cardiovascular events.

Educational Programs include:

  • Heart Disease Prevention- "Knowing your Numbers"
  • Stroke Prevention- "Knowing the Signs"
  • Stress Management
  • Identifying Diabetes and Diabetes Management
  • Healthy Eating
  • Managing Portion Sizes
  • Ways to Increase Physical Activity

Available screenings:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • Height/Weight/ Waist Circumference

Calculate your own Body Mass Index (BMI) 
Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703

Divide weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared / multiply by factor of 703

The standard weight status categories associated with BMI ranges for adults are:

BMI     

Weight Status

Below 18.5

Underweight

18.5 – 24.9

Normal

25.0 – 29.9

Overweight

30.0 and Above

Obese


   Example:Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5'5" (65") 
   Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 = 24.96
