  • Adults in Tennessee who smoke:  22.6% (1,038,700)

  • High school students who smoke:  26.3%  (85,200)

  • Kids exposed to secondhand smoke at home:  488,000

  • Annual health care costs in Tennessee caused directly by smoking:  $2.16 billion

Smoking kills more people each year than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murders, and suicides combined, and is the single most preventable cause of death and disease in our society.                   

The Tobacco Use Prevention  Program’s goals include:

  • To facilitate tobacco-policy change that decreases tobacco’s toll   in Hamilton County

  • To prevent tobacco initiation among youth, and to increase   quitting among youth and adult

  • To decrease exposure to Second Hand Smoke

  • To partner with Smoke Free Chattanooga, a coalition that seeks these goals.
