Mosquito Program

This is a seasonal program that begins around the end of April or beginning of May, and consists of both larviciding and fogging.

Larvicides are applied to breeding habitats to kill mosquito larvae. Killing thousands of mosquito larvae in a water source with a larvicide is much more effective than trying to eliminate them as adults with fogging.  Fogging is done throughout the Hamilton County area until the end of summer when mosquitoes are no longer a problem.

The container-breeding mosquito species are the primary disease carrying mosquitoes in our area. Preventing water from collecting in containers, such as buckets, cans, and clogged gutters prevents mosquitoes from reproducing.  Eliminating the water sources that breed mosquitoes is the most effective way to prevent mosquitoes.

Mosquito Fogging Requests

Hamilton County residents may call into the Environmental Health Office with complaints of severe mosquito problems.  Mosquito fogging is done by sectors. We have a phone number specifically for mosquito fogging requests. Please call (423) 209-8117. Messages are retrieved every afternoon and added to the list for fogging.

Click here for Mosquito Investigation Report Form (pdf). You can print it, fill it out, and bring it to the health department.

West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus (WNV) is carried by mosquitoes that have fed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes spread the virus to humans For more information click here: http://health.hamiltontn.org/EnvHealth/wnvreview.htm

Rats and Mice

Hamilton County residents who are experiencing a severe rodent problem may come by the Environmental Health Office and pick up a box of rat bait (one box per household per month).  For more information about the control of rats and mice, click here.
