The Public Information Officer (PIO) is responsible for increasing public awareness of Health Department issues, services, and programs. The PIO serves as a spokesperson for the Health Department by performing and conducting interviews with television, radio, and print media. The PIO develops and disseminates press releases regarding newsworthy events or programs. Further, the PIO serves as a liaison between the media and Health Department personnel. In addition, the PIO is responsible for the development of crisis and emergency communication plans to address potential public health threats.

To ensure that information provided to the public is consistent, the PIO works congruently with regional and state health department personnel. The PIO also develops publicity campaigns for special events and programs to increase public awareness and/or to promote participation. Health fair requests are documented by the PIO and distributed to appropriate staff members.
