Keeping Children Safe from the Internet

Why is it dangerous?

Predators use chat rooms as a hunting ground to locate their victims and gather information on how
to approach the child.

Warning signs to watch for that show your child may be at risk:

  • Your child spends a large amount of time online at night
  • You find pornography on your computer
  • You receive phone calls; hang-ups or mail from people you do not know
  • Your child turns off the computer or changes the screen when you walk in

How to help your child:

  • Talk openly to your child about the dangers of strangers on the internet
  • Put spy software on computer and get caller ID
  • Monitor your child's access to the internet
  • Keep the computer in a common room in the house, not in your child's bedroom
