Yellow Fever Stamaril

Yellow Fever Vaccine (Stamaril) Information and Consent Forms

FOR STAMARIL YELLOW FEVER VACCINE CLIENTS ONLY

You may have been referred to this website section because it seems that you will/may need yellow fever vaccine for your planned travel. If you have had a yellow fever vaccine in the past, you may not need another. You may receive some guidance from our travel clinic about country –specific requirements or you may be referred to the embassy website of the country you are traveling to for more information.

We would like to take a brief moment to explain the current Yellow Fever vaccine situation going on in the United States and discuss, specifically the Stamaril vaccine that you may be receiving in our clinic.

There is only one yellow fever vaccine that has been approved by the FDA and has been given in the United States for over 35 years and it is called YF-VAX. It is made by Sanofi Pasteur, a pharmaceutical company located here in the U.S. and in France. YF-VAX has just recently become unavailable in the US and will not be available for approximately 1 year because of a production problem at Sanofi.

Sanofi Pasteur also produces another yellow fever vaccine in France, called Stamaril. Stamaril vaccine also has been given for more than 30 years, in more than 70 countries with more than 430 million doses distributed, including Latin America, Europe and Africa. It is very similar to YF-VAX as it is also a live, weakened virus vaccine, and has very similar actions and side effects.

Stamaril is not a new vaccine, but it is new in the U.S. Because it is new in this country, the FDA has approved its use only as an investigational drug. It is completely your choice to receive Stamaril or not, but it is all that is currently available here. The only obligation for this study you will have is to ask any questions you may have, receive answers to your satisfaction, sign the informed consent and, after receiving the vaccine, to report any side effects and/or medical issues that are new and/or any worsening of existing problems you might experience in the 30 days following.

For women of childbearing age  only:

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are 2 significant precautions for the administration of Stamaril vaccine – are you pregnant now or planning to become pregnant in the next month? – are you currently breastfeeding?

We would also want you to report if you find out that you were pregnant when you received the vaccine or become pregnant within 30 days of receipt of this vaccine or if you breastfed within 2 weeks after receiving the vaccine.
