Infant Mortality is the death of a live-born infant in the first year of life. In the US, major causes of infant death are congenital abnormalities, pre-term/low birth weight, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), problems related to complications of pregnancy, and respiratory distress syndrome. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is the number of infant deaths that occur per 1,000 live births.
The Infant Mortality Prevention Initiative, IRIS-Increasing the Rate of Infant Survival, aims to develop and implement initiatives to reduce infant deaths in Hamilton County.
