The Traffic & Pedestrian Safety Program educates the children, teens, and families of Hamilton County on road safety topics such as child passenger safety seats, pedestrian safety, and safe driving habits, in order to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities due to motor vehicle crashes.  All the programs offered by the TPS Program are FREE.

Car Seat Donation Program

  • Qualifying parents that attend one car seat education class can receive one FREE car seat upon completion.
  • An appointments is required and classes last between 1 and 1 ½  hours.
  • To enroll in a class, you must meet all of the following requirements:
    • Be a resident of Hamilton County
    • Be enrolled in WIC, TennCare, or SNAP
    • Provide photo ID
    • Be the parent or legal guardian of the child receiving the seat
    • Must arrive in a personal vehicle and be present during the class (no taxis, Ubers, buses, being dropped off, etc
  • Ineligible - If you have previously received a car seat through Hamilton County Health Department

Car Seat Installations and Checks - Appointments are required 

  • Do you need help installing a new car seat, or have you recently adjusted a car seat and want to make sure that it is properly installed? 
  • Schedule a FREE car seat check today!  Remember, an appointment is required.
  • No qualifications necessary to schedule a car seat installation or check.

Safe Sprouts Logo

 

Safe Sprouts

  • Safe Sprouts is a pedestrian safety lesson meant for children aged 3-6 years old. The interactive lesson includes information on common street signs, crosswalk safety, navigating a parking lot, and more!
  • Each lesson lasts about 30 minutes, and includes several fun games and songs to get the kids up and moving!

Teen Driving Risks

  • The Teen Driving Risks program is a 60-75 minute lesson that covers the main risks a teen driver can expect to come across on the road, and how to overcome them.
  • This presentation covers the following:
    • Distracted driving, 
    • Driver inexperience, 
    • Driving under the influence 
    • Drowsy Driving
  • At the end of the program the students are asked to navigate a timed obstacle course with “drunk or drugged goggles” to demonstrate how drugs and alcohol will affect their ability to react properly!

Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Days

  • Walk, Bike, & Roll to School Days are celebrated across the U.S. 
  • Walk & Roll to School Day is held in early October, and Bike & Roll to School Day is held in early May. These events promote pedestrian and bike safety for elementary schoolers by holding a guided community walk or ride to kick off the school day!
  • The Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Program facilitates these events with local schools and law enforcement.
